The heater in my 76 looked worse, and then I cut the foam in half too. All I can say is outa sight outa mind, the insulation works whether it is pristine or scuffed up.

I didn't have much choice as I was not going to remove the closet and couch to get at it from the back side.

I did have a nice email conversation with Atwood about the quailty of their heaters. Foam insulation is fine, but I think it should have a metal enclosure around it for protection.

Just looks like half their product is packing material

That said, it does work nicely. Seems to heat up faster than the original one.
