Springs in the water line

I have a '75 overlander. recently rebuilt the water pump, wondering what purpose the springs inside the intake line serve?

Probably to keep the intake line from collapsing under suction.

Not probably, but for sure the spring stops the collapsing.

Thanks, next question. I tried to add inline water filter at pump. It wouldn't work properly. Tried both intake, and outfeed sides.

What wouldn't work? The filter or the pump? If it's the pump, try disconnecting the hose on the discharge side. Then run the pump until you get water out the discharge side. Then reconnect the discharge hose. Of course you must have water at the intake to the pump. Make sure the intake side is not sucking air at a fitting etc.
