Smoking water heater in electric mode

We have a 2012 27' and the hot water heater has just started smoking....literally!! It smells like a burnt tire, smoke is coming from under the sink around the tank somewhere. Now in my testing, I turned off the electric and just turned on the gas to the hot water, no smoke. What broke on the electric side of the heater that it smells like burnt wires?

It is probably burnt wires.

Better turn it off and find the problem before the trailer catches fire. I watched a 1 year old OB burn from what the fire marshal said was probably a wiring failure this spring and it was not a pretty sight and the cat did not make it out.

Thanks for the reply. We are in the Adirondacks (NY) fulltiming. I might have to find a campingworld or airstream dealer for a quick repair!

I had a similar experience several months ago with the electric water heating function on my 2012 FC 23FB. I smelled burning wires and shut it off. It was a burned relay in the electric unit. I was able to replace it myself with a new one that I ordered on line. During the time that the electric water heater was off line, I was still able to use the gas water heating function. If you do this monitor the system closely as the thermostat may have been impacted.

Yeah.. might be a good idea to only run the gas when you need it...

It was the relay!

Thanks for the quick responses. I had a local RV repair shop that was servicing the park look at the hot water heater, and indeed it was a relay. a few $$$, and 15 minutes and problem was solved. In my mind I paid the premium for the now and quick repair. However this truly is an easy fix.
