Replacement for Bowen water heater?

Is Atwood the best replacement for Bowen water heater and can I keep my original door?

The gas valve on my 63 Globetrotter's Bowen heater is bad and the dealer tells me replacements are not available. So... I will be replacing the water heater. Is an Atwood 6 gal the optimum choice. I really want keep my original outer door so I realize some fabrication might be needed on the venting. Is this possible to do. Also any tips/ tricks for removing the old heater. I've done a lot in houses but the trailer is a new experience. Along with the heater the old copper water lines are going and I am debating PEX vs CPVC is one better than the other or is it just a matter of preference?

A picture of your existing door would help

I prefer copper plumbing, but PEX would be my next choice.

What don't you like about CPVC?

I do not have a dislike for CPVC, but for a vibration-prone, somewhat cramped environment, I feel PEX is a better plumbing alternative in a travel trailer. Especially for folks that do not run plumbing for a living.

CPVC is great in that no special tools are required, but its rigidity requires more care being taken to support its runs than PEX does.

Over at they have a great article on how to put the old Bowen door back on the new Atwood(which is your only choice for a replacement):

Nice link, I sure hope to use that in the future! I could help if you had questions on a 70's, but those pics look like the information you need.
