Does your petcock pass the chunks of hard water minerals when you drain the WH?
I find myself using a screwdriver to help break up the chunks as it drains, , ,

With a valve in the drain it is not going to pass kidney stones as easily. Depending on your use, you would need to remove the valve occasionally and use one of those wand sprayers or just drain it more frequently.

Different water heater configurations have more room then others. Ours has very little so the valve choices are limited. Take a close look to make sure you have room for the valve of your choice.
