Unhappy New Atwood leaks!

Just installed a new 6 gal gas water heater with electric ignition ( the old one suffered a winter incident!), and it seems to have a small leak coming from the burner tube!? Plus, when we turned everything back on, the flame never shut off and the water never really got hot --only very warm-- after at least 25 minutes. Finally, we punted and turned everything off for the night. Any suggestions for today's round of "camping" I mean troubleshooting, would be greatly appreciated!
