My hot water heater

I was using the heater for the first time a couple days ago, and noticed that I ran out of hot water like, instantly. After knocking the icicles from various bits of my anatomy,I tried to figure out how to turn the heat up by reading The Book. I got nowhere. Would someone be kind enough to explain the process to me, assuming there is one?

Did you or someone else winterize the system ?

My guess is that your bypass valve is closed.
