Leaky gas valve stem on HW heater

I'm in the process of getting my hw heater up and running in my 1965 Overlander. I've flushed and filled tank and have had the propane burner fired up. I believe the heater is a good unit, no leaks and is intact. I can hear gas escaping intermittently as I move the gas valve stem around. What is the proper way to remove?/refurb my valve. It is a Honeywell valve unit. Wanted to know before I started unscrewing things and possibly screwing things up. Thanks in advance.

They aren't repairable but you may be able to get a universal replacement valve to fit, or get someone with a rusted or burst tank to give/sell you their valve.
