Hott Rod

We just installed a Hott Rod in our Airstream......The red on/off swith does not stay liy when turned on ...it just flashes once.... also we placed thermostat on top of heater rather then on the side. Does it make a difference. It appears to be working properly...we have hot water!!!! Any comments would be appreciated........Thanks
