Rivet Hot Water Heater Dead in Oregon

Well Camping World took one look at my old Bowen and said it was rusted they wouldn't touch it. The Hold down button was stuck so I forced it and it got stuck in. Then the cap came off and so I have to open the Uniflow cover to push the button out. I guess this is a no-no. Well, my 66 Tradewind has no hotwater and I suspect noboby will touch it. Is it worth replacing the original setup and is an Airstream Dealer the only one daring enough? I have read here that the RV500 is the only way to go. Also I need recommendations on the replacement of the original Suburban Novent Furnace. NT20 the right one? Used ok?

Help in Portland OR.

Lots of us have replaced our original bowen heater with a new Atwood. For the most part they just slide right in. The gas line and water lines may need some modifications. I would think any competent RV repair place should be able to handle it. Although Camping World seems to have an adverstion to AS expecially older ones like ours.

You can follow the link in my signature and see some info I posted about replacing mine.

Good luck.

We just bought a 66 Safari and it had a dead water heater. The dealer that we bought it from in Indiana is an airstream dealer and they put a new Atwood right in. They made a matching aluminum flange and it looks real good. They even spray painted the door grey!

Twins with Bunks?

Armorhotdog,

Am curious... Are your twins with bunks original from the factory? Could you post pics? We have a 1970 Overlander and I was thinking of adding bunks to the twins but didin't want to mess interior up too bad.

Thanks

Ken.

Portland area supplier to check out...

Since you are in the Portland area you might want to check out the "RV Parts Outlet Showroom" in Tualatin. They do not install parts as far as I know but they are very knowledgable, stock a lot of different things and seem to have great prices. One of the guys that works there used to be an Airstream dealer I believe. I am working on rebuilding a 1973 31' Sovereign and found that taking out the old water heater was pretty easy. I would guess putting in a new one would be easy too as long as it will fit in the old space.

Here is their website:

Hi AMHD, I would try Laurelhurst heating and cooling on East Burnside St. Sorry I do not have their address handy. It is about 50th ave. or so. Right now I have a 1965 Aristocrat with a Magic Chef Range. They actually had a brand new pilot light assembly there for the oven. I was amazed. I found them to be very knowledgeable. I am in the process of buying my first Airstream right now. I should be picking it up this weekend ! Yea !
