Aside from having a lot of unwanted cold water how do you know when it is time to replace the heating unit (anode?) in a water heater?

If your unit is equipped with a sacrafical corrosion protective anode, you should inspect it when you winterize each year and replace it if there has been a lot of corrosion to the anode.
