Gas water heater will not shut off.

The electronic ignition ignites hot water heater with a bang. Then the water heater continues to run after switch is turned to off position in camper. Only way to stop burner from running once lit is to shut propane off to entire camper. To me this says gas valve at water heater is staying open at all times. Now what is you idea to resolve? It's an old camper so I expect I need to replace a component on the heater but where to start?

To test the gas valve pull one of the wire of the valve while the heater is running. If the heater stops the control board was calling for heat. If with the wire off the gas valve may be mechanically stuck open. Not likely because the gas valve has 2 spring vales in it and the likely hood that both could be stuck open is slim.

Another thing to check. There are 2 klickons on the face of the heater that are wired in series. Pull any wire in that series and see if the heater stops. If it does stop the high limit switch has welded closed. They are replaced in a set.

Also verify that your regulator is putting out the correct pressure. If the gas line is running too much pressure you will get a pop when it ignited. Need a propane tech with the right gauge to check this.

Is the stove and fridge behaving normally?
