Convert water heater gas pilot to electric start?

Has anyone researched the possibility of changing the manual gas pilot lighting of the hot water tank to electric spark ignition. Is this possible?

Possible…probably. You would have to get a parts diagram of both units to see if you can cross-install the required igniter board, igniter/thermocouple and a new solenoid controlled gas valve. 12VDC would also have to be provided for the igniter board's operation, as would a control switch.

Cost effective……probably NOT. In your situation, I would get a new DSI water heater (with an electric element also) AND a new 2 year warranty. The parts required for such a project will add up and closely approximate the cost of a new complete unit.

PLUS, if you are not intimately familiar with working with LP gas components and 12VDC, I would strongly recommend against it!

There are kits out there that use a 9 volt battery. You still have to open the access door to light it. Just don't have to use a BBQ lighter or match.
