Bowen water heater

I decided to test my hot water heater yesterday for the first time. I have been restoring my 71 Safari for the last year. The tank has been full and under pressure many times and I have fired the burner to make sure it worked but never long enough to completely heat the water. After burning for about five minutes I noticed water trickling out of the main burner tube. I shut it down right away. Is this normal condensation or do I have a major problem?

Hmmm.....

Those burner tubes are pretty thick, and I believe they are one piece units. I would think if anything was going to go it would be the tank itself. My old tank rotted out on the bottom. I would fire it up again, and let it run until the t-stat shuts down the burner. If the leak gets bigger as the unit heats up, you may have a problem, but I suspect it is condensation.

Water heater

Hello Jerry,
I am trying to to get my water heater to work. The knob that says on, off and pilot won't move. It is set on "on" now. Any ideas on how to get it to move. I have put a lot of liquid wrench on it, but it still won't budge. Hate to force it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's time to replace the regulator. If you have to go do all that to get it turn I wouldn't trust it.

Hi Dan,
Can't help you with that one. I had a small leak in my old Bowen after the water got hot. I decided to replace the Bowen with a new 6 gal. Atwood. Glad that I did. If you're looking for a replacement parts try Marks RV web site.

Dan, I purchased mine from a local RV dealer. The inlet and outlet were not the same as the orginal. I had to use a bushing on one or both. Be sure it is rated for Propane. The dealer had a box full, the sales person said that were told not sell them unless they were exact macth. Not much chance of that after 34 years. I convinced her I know what I was doing. Cost was $70.00 or $80.00. Home Depot or Lowes had none rated for Propane.
