Bowen W.H. problems on '66 Overlander

Our old Bowen water heater seems to have a temp control valve problems. It leaks gas at the dial and won't burn a clean strong flame. I want to replace it, but I am not sure how to get the control valve off. I have thought about bypassing it with a Hott Rodd electric unit, but the Bowen does not appear to have a drain valve. (1) how does the control valve come off and (2) is there a drain valve somewhere to tap into?
Tired of cold showers.

Well, it is out. My plumber told me to just 'grab' it with a big pair of channel locks or pipe wrench and unscrew. It does have a brass fitting, but was a little intimidating as it has likely been in there since 1966. Now if the weather holds, the new one goes in today. Hot Water!
