Atwood Overheating

My 6 Gal Atwood gas/electric with electronic ignition appears to be heating the water to an excessive temperature and locking out until it cools down. It just started doing this today. Has anyone had experience with this and know what is necessary to correct it? Thanks in advance!

Yep
Had that happen, it over heated to the point the pressure relief valve popped.
Turns out there are two thermostats that either break or the plastic holding them down gets too brittle to hold them in place. The latter happened to me. Easy fix though, you can buy a kit that has both T-stats and new hold down material. Comes on a card from your local RV center. Took me all of 15 minutes to replace them. No further troubles.

Thanks Gary. Looks like I'll pay a visit to my local RV shop!

Had the same thing happen with our Suburban. Had an RV tech come out and he pointed out that one needs to drain the tank, flush it out and clean off the heating element once a season. Mine was quite cruddy and built up with calcium deposits partly because of Phoenix's bad water. Have plans to do this again after this weekend's trip. When reinserting the heating element, use teflon tape. Looks to be a simple service.

Thanks Brad, I can do that as well. Mine is only a couple of months old though, so I'm not sure it could be gummed up already. Will check to be certain though. Does anyone know how one accesses the heating element on the Atwood models?
