atwood DSI Solenoid Replacement

I need to replace the Solenoid Valve on my Atwood 6 Gallon Water Heater; it is a electronic ignition (without a pilot light)

The unit operates fine, but we developed a small leak on the side just before the venturi tube. Atwood indicated that there are no serviceable parts, and the solenoid needs to be replaced.

It looks pretty straight forward -- any pointers from somebody wh has replaces before?

Here is the part:

ATWOOD RV WATER HEATER GAS VALVE DSI # 93870 - eBay (item 220407919749 end time Jun-02-09 09:43:39 PDT)

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,
I replaced the solenoid valve, E.C.O., T-Stat, and burner tube on our '87 last year and it is really straight forward and easy. The newer solenoid mounts differently than on our original water heater so I had to jerry rig the mounting which was no problem. Other than that all you need is an open ended wrench (preferably a pipe fitting wrench) and some teflon pipe dope. After you replace the valve be sure to leak test the flare fitting with some windex or soapy water.

Thanks for the reply -- it was pretty straight forward, and I got it done in less than hour.

I have worked with natural gas, and LP before, just had not replaced a valve or solenoid on one of my RVs before. In my experience, you should not use teflon tape on gas fittings, as they are designed for a metal to metal seal. I did test for a leak with using soapy water.

I am not sure why this valve was so corroded -- on the outside, and on the inside before the screen.

I was lucky, in that I did not have to modify the mounting bracket.

Thanks again,

Tom
