'71 Sovereign furnace?

Does anyone know what the original furnace in a 71 Sovereign was?

Thanks!

I have a NT 30 a few years old in my 71. I get a loud squealing noise that sounds like a motor bearing or a old girlfriend I don't particularly care for. Can the bearing be replaced or does the whole motor assembly need to be chucked? Like my girlfriend, sometimes if I kick her she shuts up.

Best bet is to replace the motor.

Since it only lasted 39 years, you already got more than your moneys worth.

However, some of the old Suburban furnace motors are no longer available.

I am not sure if the old NT-30 motor is still available as I am not at my office at the moment.

Usually, lubing a furnace blower motor, results in a short term fix, if at all.

While the coach is 39 years old the furnace is less than 5 years old. It is a NT30SP. Is the motor bearing / bushing replaceable?

A furnace 39 years old I don't think is worth trying to fix at all.

I am not aware of any furnace motor repair parts available from any RV parts supplier, or Airstream.

The so called service manual is not very serviceful. The phone number is old. I got the new number and the Suburban techs will only refer you to a "qualified" service provider.

A new motor will cost about $100 with shipping. I can get a new NT30SP from Palomino for $350. so my decision is replace the motor or the whole dang thing.

Anybody know what replacing the motor entails?

1. Remove the furnace and place it on a work bench.

2. Remove the blower motor.

3. Remove the burner log.

4. Clean all the brner log slots.

5. Remove all the rust and dirt from the combustion chamber.

6. Reinstall the burner log with a new gasket.

7. Replace the motor.

8. Bench test the furnace.

9. Reinstall the furnace.

10. Have a cool one.

Andy

I'm seeing that one could spend $350 pretty easy just trying to fix the old furnace....is there a website for Palomino? I'm just going to take the plunge before it gets cold here.

I'm facing servicing an NT30 burner soon.

Is there an enamel or other coating that would prevent the rust and stand up to the heat? I considered engine enamel paints, but do not know the actual temperatures reached in the furnace. Can anyone with a laser thermometer take a reading for me?

Palomino's phone # is 800 297 5830. They have one NT30SP left. They sell cheap because they don't answer many questions. U have to know what you need.

By the way started her up again and it was quieter. Think I will wait and try a thorough internal cleaning before I replace (thanks Andy). I know there were mud daubers in there before. Maybe the noise is from a loose squirrel cage, or the squirrel is complaining when I turn er on.

You need a laser thermometer? It's over there beside the particle accelerator.

Seriously speaking, it seems that once the combustion chamber has started to rot out, the useful service life of the furnace is over. IMHO it's false economy to futz around trying to save a few dollars over something so potentially lethal.

Look at it this way: if your home furnace was 40 years old wouldn't you just replace it, and never even considering painting as a repair?

I am assuming the repair is for the trailer you list as yours, of course...

This is Texas. It's a thermometer, and it's got a frikkin laser beam, so it's a "laser thermometer!"

Yeah, I know it's an infra-red thermometer. I hadn't slept in over 24 hrs when I wrote that.

I haven't been sleeping because I just shelled out my very last penny for the downpayment on a new truck, and the very next day, I get maybe-offered a free '69 Ambassador, but it needs four new tires and they want it gone NOW, so, well, I have no way to go get it
