2 water pump questions

'18 27' FC, FBA.
I tried to post this with pic, not sure what happened.
1. Can I use the filter fitting as an intake for RV safe antifreeze?
2. The clear hose in compressed by the zip tie. I assume it for air and it that it is not fully closed (that would be hard to do). Is this OK?
I am trying to attach a .jpg image. But, clicked choose file and upload.

The water pump won’t work if it is sucking air with the mesh filter open. It is simple to remove the inlet side fitting of the pump and attach a hose with a threaded coupling. It too has to be tight for the pump to draw the antifreeze from the jug.

The clear hose is the vent for the fresh water tank and it would be better if it wasn’t pinched.

There is an adapter kit you can buy that will fit onto the pump where your water line comes in. It has a valve to take water from the pipe to the water tank or switch it to a second opening. The second opening has a screw off cap were you attach clear tubing with a fitting on one end and the other end goes into the jug of antifreeze. Check out the Camco version on Amazon.

If you don’t want to put the fitting in, you can also get a hand pump from camco and pump it using the water inlet. I did it before I put the fitting in. It works, just need two people; one to pump and the other to open up the lines.

I just completed the installation of the Camco kit that Rich mentioned above. Easy to install and works great!! Highly recommend it.

Winterization Process Check-List:
Drain/clean Hot water tank
Open all low point drains
(allow system to drain then close low point drains)
(Set hot water tank by-pass)
Blowout fresh waterlines with Viair Compressor at City Water Connection
Open all taps one at a time (hot and cold water) until dry

• Kitchen
• Bathroom
• Toilet
• Toilet Sprayer
• Shower
• Outdoor Shower

Pump RV pink anti-freeze through waterlines at water pump inlet side (include the filter)
Open all taps one at a time (as above) until pink flows out
Add anti-freeze to all drain traps

• Kitchen
• Bathroom
• Shower
• Toilet Bowl

Add a little extra anti-freeze to the Black Tank via toilet
Add some anti-freeze to toilet to maintain the seal

The valve should be so that antifreeze is pumped through the screen (left of screen). That is so antifreeze will pool where the screen is. That area has a tendency to pool water. When I blew my system out I took that screen out and there was water there. That’s why I decided to pump antifreeze through the system despite the fact I had blown it out pretty well.

Hi Bullsmoor, greetings from central Kentucky and welcome to the forum.

On my 2006 23' Safari, as I look under the wardrobe, the pump is on the left side, the valve is on the pump then there is a pipe that goes to the filter, then another pipe that goes to the water tank. I take the cap off the filter and clean it out several times a season but we rarely use the water tank. If we have, when I take the cap off the filter the water on the right side hose seems to drain back to the tank. I turn on the pump and it pulls that little bit of water near the filter into the pump.

Mine came with the valve already installed, but it doesn't look like it would be too difficult.

I agree with drBrick about putting the valve PRIOR to the filter.
I did not do that and am thing of changing it.

I used my air compressor. So, I avoided the issue of installing the new fitting into the line.

Due to electricity location and where the trailer is parked, I connected the air hose to my fresh water hose, with a pressure regulator, just for safety sake.
It seemed to work well. The poured RV water antifreeze in all drains.

There will be a few drops of water left in the pump head and filter/strainer. Because the pump is at the end of a fresh water line and blocked with a check valve (the pump diaphragm), air cannot push that water out. In some of the older manuals it said to remove the discharge pipe from the pump and run it a moment to discharge that water. Still, after running the pump, water can remain. You have to get it out. I've had to replace parts and one pump because I failed to remove the water.

I added the Camco winterizing valve. No problems since then.

Sounds like you are good except for residual water in the pump.


To answer your question number 1, yes. I blow out with air, using the city water inlet.



I also pump antifreeze. I disconnect the hose from the tank to the strainer, and connect my antifreeze hose to the strainer.


And a tip for using antifreeze: The pink color can stain fabric and also vinyl flooring. Spread towels before opening your antifreeze jugs, and have one under the strainer when you disconnect the hose. It will spill some antifreeze.
