We have no tank!

Well Guys Hubby finished pulling the belly pan down today, that in it self was a disgusting mess. But what he didn't find under the belly pan was more puzzling. We have NO grey tank. Everything drain to the rear and is set up for a hook up to outside sewer only. So I guess we'll be putting in a grey tank and while we are at it will do a black tank also. I don't understand why someone would order a AS with no grey tank unless they were only going to camp where they had sewer hookup. Seems kind of dumb to me.

Day 5 of the gutting. Tomorrow we are going to MA to order our axels, tires and rims. Then stopping back in Providence RI to see about replacement tambour for all the door, although I think we are a teeny bit away from reinstalling the cabinets!

Airstream didn't add gray water tanks until the 1973 model year.

All units 72 and earlier were without gray tanks. In 73 a few units had them, but in 74 they became mandatory. When boondocking most people prior to 74 just hooked up a hose and let it run on the ground. Laws have changed and that practice is now illegal in many (but not all) places.

and there are issues related to ADDING a tank...

especially IF you plan to put it aft.

bd'mom...

here is a suggestion that u r free to ignore.

-uwanted a trailer
-ufound a trailer
-ugot her home
-u r now taking it appart
-u hope to put it back2gether

consider starting just ONE LONG THREAD on the process.

those that can or want to help,
will be better able to review what it is
and what's been done...
you might end up with one of those really long, really neat, full monty type threads
full of pictures, wisdom, humor, aluminum, parts and rivets...
AND
with 1000s of hits n replies.

u have read some of those neat-o threads right?

the 1st step is a swanky title for the trailer and your misadventures.

-no tanks 4 u...
-what were they smoking in '72 ?
-the nixon years trailer
-putting humpty back2gether
-the mystic pizza hut...
-measure twice, connecticut once

and so on.

cheers

OK , no grey tank until 72. So were did the toilet flushing go? You could only use it when you were hooked up to sewer? New to all this airstream stuff. But hey I did learn what the banana wrap was today!

2airishuman, Tomorrow when I post I will start a thread with a fun title, and keep adding to it. I shall take your advice and not ignore it!

The toilet goes into the black tank & the shower/sinks go into the grey tank. The grey water drained out the back.

The black water stuff exits the trailer through the same pipe as the gray water. There should be a T handle located inside the rear bumper area to open and close the valve to the black tank.

OK 2airishuman let's cut the crap. I don't have a black tank and I don't have a grey tank. SO everything use to go onto the ground or got carried away in gramma cooking pot? I think this means I should be staying at The Holiday Inne! I've got a lot to learn about this camping thing. All I wanted to do was take the 2 grandkids to MT Rushmore next summer!

You're not scaring me away, I'll get the hang of this stuff, just give me time!

You MUST have a black water tank?...that had to be part of the basic install.

I have 73 overlander and I had Inca plastics in california make one for me.
Inca Plastics Inc. - RV Tanks

I will send you a pic and sketch I sent Inca in california. I do not know if my pic will help but it might. My suggestion is to get the exact dimensions of the orginal tank. I just finished restoring my 73 and I found it very important to go with orginal specs when doing the black tank. You will need a box to hold the tank. Any airconditioner sheet metal place can make it for you. There are tons of threads with instructions on what to do. Picture also.

blue boy

Just park a blue boy and hook it up to catch the grey water. I keep 3 blue boys (15 gal each). One for catch grey water, one for back and one to hook up while I am emptying the other two.

The black water discharge is controlled by the valve at the back (T handle). Grey water just flows out the discharge pipe.

Your toilet is raised above the floor, no? That raised step is the black tank. It sits above the floor and empties via the outlet at the rear.

OK I guess we have found the black tank under the toilet. Not very big is it? But NO grey water tank.

2air' I couldn't stop laughing after reading your link. But I'll tell ya, I'm not carrying it in a blue boy or grammas pot!

Brian, the grey tank will happen probably next week. If we cant find one to fit, I wil contact you. Thanks.

ticki2 its a 1959.

Annette:

That black tank in the back is the only waste tank you have. Your trailer lets sewage from the toilet go into the black tank. Your soapy water from your sinks and tubs goes past the black tank to the ground. You will have to buy a portable tank to put your soapy water in for dumping. Back in the day people just let it go on the ground but laws have changed. Most soapy water is phosphate based and that is bad for streams, rivers and lakes. Algae will explode in phosphate and kill the fish.

I camp at my own property and I let the soapy water on the ground. All it does is fertilize the lawn and make its roots system stronger, and it is good for flower and seed production.
