Wasting my time?

Please take a look at the photo. Is there a way I can put a new valve on this black tank? The white flange appears to be glued and threaded to the black flange which looks to be fiber-glassed to the fiberglass tank. Any good ideas out there or should I be looking for a new tank? The one I have sat above the floor and was a 16 gal.

You must cut the original brass outlet off the fiberglass tank.

Then, you can carefully fiberglass the flange, the white part you show in your photo, to the tank.

Make sure that you orient the flange so that the valve can easily be installed.

Other than that, there is no simple solution, since your Airstream is from the early 60's.

Mine does not appear to have any brass. The black part that is fiber-glassed to the tank is a black, I would guess ABS material. I checked from the other side of the tank where the threaded (also an ABS type of material) toilet flange area is and don't see any brass from the inside of the tank either. I've attached a photo of the white flange and you can see all the screw holes are in poor shape. I've not worked with ABS but was wondering if it is feasible to somehow fill and redrill the holes so that I could attach a new valve.

Cut it out and do what Andy recommended. That flange is not worth salvaging if you patch it up and reinstall the tank you will be very unhappy when you are dropping the tank to replace the patched flange.

I guess you could try cutting the white flange off the black flange with a grinder. If successful you could glue a new white one on. Then you wouldn't have to do any fiberglassing. If it doesn't work then you could cut the black one off and start from scratch.
Alternatively, have you checked on the price of a replacement tank?

Jim, unless I were sure as to the integrity of the repair, I would not reinstall the tank. Never worked with fiberglass is another problem.

BigAl, I can't seem to find a tank of about the same size, 16 gal. I'll continue to look.

All-Rite.com will make a tank to your exact specifications with the inlet and outlet holes in the size and thread pattern of your choosing and put them exactly where you want them. I had them make me a fresh water tank and it was within 1/16" of my measurements.
