Waste valve picture

Please look at this picture and tell me what to do? The waste valve is stuck closed and will not open? The handle will slide back and forth but nothing happens. I need to drain it before I can replace it. I dont even know if it needs to be replaced but it dont work?

I just bought the coach, a 1979 argosy and it has been sitting for over 10 years.

what do you mean...

by nothing happens - is there water in the tank? I so, I guess you could get some valve lubricant from an RV store and add it to the tank to loosen up the seals. Can you feel the blade sliding open, or that what you mean by "nothing happens."

I've had mine all apart, there is a slide in the valve, it is conneced by a detent. it may have degraded and is slipping past. I replaced the parts on mine by diassembleing a new valve I had. (used the original body)

IF...the handle slides in and out with no resistance whatsoever - just the rod sliding back and forth -

the valve COULD be rebuilt.

Various camping supply stores carry "kits" for the Thetford valve rebuilds.

On the opposite side of the valve that the picture is taken there are two areas that the valve separates - the belly pan will have to be cut or dropped from this area.

Not a terribly hard job, but a terribly nasty one.
