To Open or Keep Closed, That is the question

I have read in a few locations that it is a good idea to create a screen cover for your sanitation sewer dumps. One would do this to keep critters out of the tanks while letting them air out between uses. I was wondering if in doing so will the seals dry out? Is this a good idea or not?
