Thetford Valves?
I need to replace the dump valves on my 1976 Airstream while replacing the balck water holding tank. The originals are Thetford; however, I am thinking about going back with a different type. Is this advisable? Is there a better alternative?
Also, someone suggested that I install electric valves that can be operated from the inside. Has anyone had any experience with those?

My experience has been the Thetford valves last a very long time. Valterra valves seem to get sticky and difficult to operate after a short time - just my own experience. Notice the price difference between the two.

I was going to replace my old Thetford valve with a Valterra but they are not the same size. Overall the Valterra was smaller and the mounting holes did not line up.

My experience is that the Thetford valves are a quality product that will often last 20 years or more. Bearing in mind the unpleasant labor involved in changing them when defective, you are right to want the best, and I know of none better than the Thetford.

Unless the dump valves are VERY easy of access, I wouldn't opt for electric.

How different are the valves. I am having difficulty locating a valve with the specific model number as my originals. Does it matter? Is there not just a 3" hole on each side and a valve in the middle?

I'm not sure that I see the benefit vs cost of electric unless there are physical limitations. You still have to go back there to unhook the slinky, you may as well pull the handles while you're there.

Some are "bond-on", some are "clamp-on", some have the T-handle on the valve, others have a threaded end for your long handle. You will find pictures here:
