Tanks out. Now What?

OK, guys. Now that I have the black tank out I have three issues.

1. I need to be able to add a toilet flange to it. Checking the forums, the flanges normally screw into the toilet opening. Of course mind does not have that threaded piece in the tank. So how do I add a mount for a toilet?

2. I need to add a connection for a modern valterra dump valve on the bottom. I'd like to fiberlgass a metal flange to the tank and then use a bolt on plastic flange for the valve. This way if I snag it, hopefully it would save the tank. Any ideas?

3. I need to add a vent pipe connection to the top of the tank. I guess this would be just drilling a 1" hole in the top of the tank (where it will end up under the vanity) then screw and glass on some sort of nipple to take the vent stack. Comments?

Tim,

I'm tempted to say try some of the new urethane adhesives to glue the new hub on, for the floor flange to screw (or glue) onto. Either that, or get an epoxy tank repair kit from West Marine or some other marine store.

Be sure you clean the fiberglass very carefully with acetone. Fiberglass has a surface wax that will prevent adhesion.

Be very careful that you get the hub perpendicular and the flange level, with the right clearance for the gasket. Set it up with the plywood cover in place before you glue it in, and dry fit all the parts.

I'm planning to leave my outlet at 2". I'm going directly to a tee, with the macerator pump mounted on the side of the tee, and then manual dump valve below that.

Hey tim ,
just do that ,glass on the metal flange to bolt the valterra connection to.
I have posted to you in detail on how to do the fiberglass and the vent .You can now put the vent so it comes up right behind the toilet with a short hose
with an elbow since the tank is out .It is really easy to do .Also I think you
could get the closet flange at any home store with an extension piece that
would go into the tank ,like a 4" long section of black plastic plumging pipe
that fits into the bottom of the closet flange, the home type is the same as the threaded rv type but smooth on the inside (no threads)I would get the bottom stuff done and fit the tank back in place ,then refit your floor as
the closet flange screws doen to the wood floor.Test fit the flange with the extension inserted in the bottom of it to the black tank .Your hole in the tank can be sized for the extension to go inside abit .Once the fit is right ,then
mark the position and you can glass in the extension piece .Then later you can slide the closet flange down over the pipe section sticking up out of the tank and screw it in place ,removable flange for later if needed. So thats all
there is too it .Thats the best info I can give you .If anyone has a good idea
thats better ,then I would go with that .Lots of good ideas on the forums.

Thanks Scott,

That is basically my plan now. I borrowed my buddys grinder so I can start grinding out the original flange(s) and prepare to glass in new one(s).

I think I need to get to the rv store and get a closet flange and dump valve just so I can see what I am working towards.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep ya posted!

Tim I spent the day working on my black tank. I now have a modern fitting top and bottom. I cut the original off and filled out the hole to fit a toilet flange. Then cut the bottom off and routed the hole to fit a valtera flange so I can use a Thedford or Valtera valve. The big hole is the original dump valve access, I'll keep it for a cean out. The small hole is the overflow that will be sealed.
There is a vent in the wall but never was hooked up, so I will drill a hole and connect it up. Now just to figure a route for the dump pipe and fit a grey water tank.

Great Doug,

This is exactly the stuff I'm trying to figure out now.

I trying to figure out why your tank has so many holes.

On the second photo (024) shows a large hold on the left which appears to be threaded, and a smaller (original?) hold to the right.

The hole on the right looks like that is where the original toilet was on my tank.

I'm trying to connect the dots here on what you did. Do you now have a threaded fitting in that tank to accept the toilet closet flange?

Also, tell me more about the dump fitting you got and how you're using it.

Thanks, looking good too!

Tim this tank had the dump valve right beside the toilet. You reached down and pulled up on a handle. That is what the big hole was for. It's threaded and has a big brass lid. I'll keep that lid on and can get inside for inspections.
I now have a threaded fitting in the tank and a threaded toilet flange fits on it, all from a trailer supply. The bottom fitting is a flange from a valtera valve and a 3" coupling fits on it then you can go any way needed from that.

Thanks Doug.

Did you have to add the threaded fitting peice to the tank to accept the toilet flange?

If so, where did you get it? How did you add it?

Any part numbers for the threaded fitting added to the tank? Any part number for the dump flange added to the tank?

Can I send you my tank to have the stuff added? Just kidding!

hey Safari Tim ,

I did not know you could get a threaded section like Shacksman has shown.
That looks like the idea I had posted to you .I think that will solve your
problem. There must be more than a few choices there for closet flange
styles.I would go with that setup right there .You would have a little
adjustability when installing the flange to the floor platform.

I just bought that exact same closet flange yesterday. Problem is I need the part added to the tank that allows it to screw into.

So in the picture (025) does that closet flange shown in the close up, screw into the hole on the right? Did you have to add that threaded peice in the tank?

your probably needing shacksman to reply ,but It looks like that small piece
fits into your tank ,in the small hole in the picture ,has a step to it so it should not fall into the tank .Still would need to be glassed in or epoxyed.I would test fit all the parts in place in the trailer with the new floor section
in place ,drop in the small piece that goes in the hole for the flange to screw into then put on the flange ,see if it fits properly ,if you glass and all before a test install and it is not in the right place ,oh boy !

Tim the piece that fits into the tank is a 3" cleanout fitting. It comes with a cap that is threaded. I had it in a pile of parts. It fits tightly in the hole then the threaded toilet flange threads into it. I cut the threads down on both pieces to keep the flange lower on the floor. In Canada we use black abs for all house drains and these pieces are very easy to find. If you can't get one I have another here, I'll send it to you.

Thanks Doug.

I'll check our local stores. At least now I know what to look for.

Thanks:

Tim I just checked the piece. I got it out of a box of parts I have here. It's not a 3" cleanout, it's the piece that scews on a blue tank that the hose fits onto. They usually are white and you should be able to get them at any trailer store. The 3" cleanout will work but the hole in the tank would have to be bigger. Right now the piece I used fits the brass ring that is left in the tank.

Well, now I'm slightly confused again

Do you have a photo of it? Are you going to fiberglass it in place?

When I was at Camping World and asked for the closet flange I got a blank stare. Then asked, uh.. what kind of toilet do you have again?

Tim, this is the piece you can use. It's the part that screws to the blue tank and a dump hose fits on it. The one I used happens to be black so I thought it was a 3" cleanout.
I also think I will hook up a water connection to the tank to help flush it out as it is very flat. The new tailers have such a connection.

Hey Tim, bring your trailer up here, we'll work them out together. I'll make room in the yard for you.
Not sure where you are but it's only 2500 miles from San Francisco.

Wow Doug!

You got a regular assembly line going there. Thanks for the offer but that is a little far for me!

Thanks for the pics too!
