"sewer solution"

has anyone every used one of these? I saw the link on the "airstreamtrailers.com" site. Of course, the manufacturer says that they're the best thing since.....well, since "the flush toilet" (sorry...). It does look like a cool idea.....just wondering if it works as advertised.

We have used one for awhile and wouldn't go back to the 3" kind. This is mess free and it doesn't clog. We also use <www.rvchem.com> for the black and grey tanks.

Silly me, but I have a third question. What do you do when emptying your tanks at a dump station with no water supply?

Storing it is great - it just coils like a hose. When we use the Crestline product (see above web site), we don't have any problem with solid matter in the black tank. We just drain the black water first, then the grey water. The grey water cleans the Sewer Solution and doesn't leave any mess. I know this sounds too true to believe, but it really does work.

Ok, here's a tip from my first "real" camping trip in my '73: don't use the sewer solution on a trailer that has no grey-water tank.

I finally tried mine out...it works as designed, BUT: as I was dumping, a wad of tp came out, and clogged it up for about 2 seconds....no big deal, right? WRONG. when there's no grey-tank with a closed valve, that slight backpressure caused the black-water to backup into my shower. The shower pan is lower than the the black-tank. at least when the black tank is full...so, gravity did what it does. This was an unpleasant experience. More unpleasant was the fact that my wife discovered it before I did. She was not amused. It'll be difficult to get her to camp again in this thing......

on the plus side for you owner's of more modern equipment, that little clog was cleared pretty quickly...but not quickly enough. It does break stuff up and move it along nicely.

So that was my only attempt w/ the sewer solution. next time, I used the old slinky, and that worked fine. BUT THEN: the same thing happened again at another campsite where the campground's sewer connection was up rather high. It wasn't higher than the trailer's sewer output, but it was close. And I didn't have the super-slinky-support system, so there was a sag in the line. I did try to prop it up as best I could, but it wasn't perfect. still a small sag. Well, that's all it takes to make a small backup into the shower.

I am seriously considering adding a grey-water tank, it that is even possible. Nothing ruins a perfectly good vacation like a sewer backup.

First thought is it sounds like you need a stopper in the shower drain when you dump. Second thought is how much back pressure is occuring? Will it move to the next highest outlet, the sink? Third thought, that stopper better hold on real good!

yeah, I thought the same thing about the shower stopper. There is one, and that might be "ok"....but it seems to me to be a serious design flaw, regardless. So the stopper will maybe keep the yucky-water from coming into the shower pan, but it won't stop it from filling the line up to the trap, which will still stink like hell...and is unsanitary. I understand why they didn't put actual grey-water tanks in these older trailers, but there should be something that will *prevent* black-water from even starting up those lines, like a dump-valve or something. Then I suppose someone would start running water inside the trailer and forget to open said valve, and have an overflow accident w/ grey water.....oh well. That would be better than filling a shower w/ $h*t, if you ask me. But then....they didn't ask me.....

and no, it wouldn't affect the sink, because it is up much higher than the top of the black tank. (couple of feet?). The black-tank in this unit is partly under the floor, and partly above the floor...toilet sits on top of it. the top of the tank is probably 8 inches or so above floor level, and the shower pan is floor level. so the water will fill up the shower pan until it is the same level as the water in the tank...or the resistance in the sewer hose is gone.

A less expensive soultion to the no grey water tank issue could be to install a gate valve in the grey water line prior to the main sewer drain. Allowing you to seal that system off from the rest of the drain system as well as from the backpressure issue.

A grey water tank is not a 100% soultion. I have had the grey tank fill up and start to fill the shower thru backflow on a few occasions. I will admit is does not have the same olfactoy impact as sewage, but is still a bit shocking. Especially when it happens in the middle of a shower

I won't tell you the story about how I plugged the sewer in the basement at home only to have the pressure build up enough to start pushing water out of the wash machine drain pipe which was 4 feet high off the floor. Oops I did!

I started using the Sewer Solution when I had my '93 Excella. I still use in on the HR. It is less mess than the stinky slinky, takes a little longer do dump and flush, but does a good job.

I got a "Y" hose connector with shut off valves on each, attached a one way valve to the hose going to shore water. Put a 3 ft hose on each of the 2 coming from the Y. One goes to my black tank flusher connection, the other to SS quick disconnect. I can really flush the tank, then close gate valves and clean out the dump pipe, run fresh water a little longer and flush out the SS hose.

I carry an extra 10 ft hose, needed only one time so far. I also carry a new slinky and donut in the hose compartment of the coach for emergencies, but have never needed them. I do like Dwight, if I don't have water I wait untill it get to a dump station or to home.

My grandson and I "camp out" in the back yard often and we do use the toilet there so need to dump the tanks occasionally.

I extended the sewer clean-out behind my house with plastic pipe. I park the trailer about 70 ft behind the house where I have electric hoop up. When I want to dump, I screw 10 ft pieces of 1 inch plastic pipe together, stick the end with an elbow and 8 inch length of pipe down the new clean-out, hook the SS to the other end, run my garden hose out to coach, dump and flush.

Yes, you will need to get an adapter for it to mate with the Airstream.

"Sewer solution" doesn't make the adaptor; valterra makes it. it is called a "universal adapter". Available at Camping World, or just about any place that sells RV stuff. 4 bucks. I'll see if I can find a link.....
