Thumbs up Sewer Hose Adapter Size Problem

Hey guys, Been a longtime since I have been to the boards. (Technically, I suppose that is a good thing cause it means no problems) Anyway, I had an issue with my sewer hose adapter which is the original Thetford hose to my 1976 Argosy. I twisted on the adapter and crack! One of the 2 prongs that hold it secure snapped off. I went to the RV store and grabbed a new one but iwas just a hair too small (maybe by a millimeter or so) So then I did some research online and ordered this:

SmartDrain Sewer System

I got a great deal on it (half price) so when it arrived I was pumped. But guess what it was also shy by about a millimeter. Anyone have the story here? Did my pipes expand over time? Did they change the size? Does this have something to do with Valterra? I am at a loss...

Thanks for any and all help!

I had to use these on my Bambi II. They are cheaply made and easily break.

Your Argosy has Thetford fittings, most RV's now use Valterra sewer connectors, including new Airstreams. You can get a Thetford to /Valterra adaptor (noted in AWCHIEF's post, or get an original Thetford at the RV store (they may have to order it, but they are available). To use the Sewer Solution you will probably have to use the adaptor.

So just to be clear idroba, you are saying that in order to use the Thetford Sewer Solution, you think I need to get a Thetford to Valterra adapter? I will give that a go and report back...

I just looked at the Thetford Sewer Solution link you posted and it is unclear if it uses the "old" Thetford system you have on the Argosy, or the much more universal (now days) Valterra system. I would expect it probably uses the Valterra system now. You might call them (web site has a support section) and ask them directly.

Even Sony which made the Betamax VCR finally gave in and started to make the VHS recorders, so at some point companies just switch over. And now, no one makes any VCR's at all! How the world changes.

Maybe someday we will have digital poop and Sony can start making those sewer hoses...

I had a similar problem. Sewer fittings were very stiff after not being used all winter. I couldn't get them to connect without using a pair of strap wrenches. Here's what I did:

1) Leave fitting(s) out in the sun for a while and let them soften up.
2) Then apply a liberal amount of plumber's grease on both fittings.

Crabbey1, yes, Thetford no longer uses Thetford bayonets, so you have three choices:

1) use the adapter
2) replace the end of the drain hose with an (old style) Thetford connector
3) replace the fitting on your trailer with a Valterra fitting, possibly also replacing the valve at the same time.

VTS has parts as do several other sources.

After some issues with delivery via Amazon, my adapter arrived. I am happy to report that it fits perfectly and does exactly what I needed. Thank you all for the responses. Another crisis averted thanks to the helpful folks on the Airforums.
