Black/Grey Water Valves - Drama on the road!!!

Hope someone can respond to this tonight (we're on the road with the 1976 Argosy, somehwere in Montana, as I write this). The first long shake-down trip with the old trailer has gone very well, with the exception of the black and grey water valves.

Per the book, the black water valve is in the rear, within the bumper, but our unit has a label on the back bumper cover stating that the GREY water valve is there. Could the book be wrong?

Seems we are having trouble truly turning these valves to off (both times we've dumped while on the road some fairly rotten stuff has poured out before we opened the valves). This did not happen during our first, short trip with the trailer. Is the closed position really achieved by pushing the valve stems all the way in -- or all the way out? The book is also unclear about this, saying to pull them "UP" to open the valves.

Sorry for such a long note. Hope to hear from some of you before we break camp tomorrow morning (and lose this great wi-fi connection).

On my 75 Trade Wind the black tank valve handle is located inside the bumper area and the gray tank valve handle is outside next to the sewer hose connector. Pushing the valve handles all the way in will close the valves. There are two small clips that secure the handle (valve) in the closed position by snapping over the ends of the handle.
