Bayonet ring repair
My project for the evening was to replace a worn bayonet ring on my drainage system. I bought the replacement 6 months ago and finally got around to taking care of this nasty job. My service manual shows a 3" calder coupling but I could not see where to access it from the rear compartment or underneath without taking a few panels off. It further stated "Fittings are cemented together with ABS corlon cement and therefore cannot be successfully separated". HA! I took my trusty Dremel tool with grinding tip and ground that rascal off! I was careful not to get much into the black pipe the old ring was cemented to. It took me a few hours mostly because I could not reach the very top area of approximately 3/4". I took a new belt sander belt, turned it inside out and went to town with the old back and forth motion. I finally ground it down and then smoothed out the rest of the pipe until the new ring fit like a glove. I cleaned the fittings and cemented them with PVC/ABS cement. Since the lowest lug on the ring had hit something and broke, I slightly offset the new ring with the top lug appx. 1 o'clock. I checked ahead of time to be sure that my cap, sewer elbow and Flush King would all fit at the new angle before cementing. One more project out of the way. After all that, is there any easier way because you can't cut the existing pipe off and glue another on with a fitting due to close tolerances?
