Adding a periscope...

I was adding a periscope to my trailer yesterday so I can spy on other campers in the campground.

I was wondering how far down it needs to go so I don't hit it on an overpass?

Just far enough so it doesn't poke a hole in the floor. Unless, of course, you want it to serve a dual purpose as an auxillary jack.

Auxillary- Any object, animate or inanimate, which is in the way when not needed and missing or broken when it is.

Funny you should mention the torpedo tubes bill benton ,my 60 tradewind
has the two tubes for the sewer hose or antenna storage underneath as
original and they stick out under the belly pan equally spaced on each side of the tongue ,looks like the African Queen with Humphry bogart and Katherin
Hepburn where the rigged torpedos were mounted in the bow above the waterline pretty funny ,but always reminds me of that classic film .

Actually I was adding two vents in the roof that were never there for my retrofit. This was the grey tank/kitchen vent.

I drilled the hole in the closet ceiling and up through the roof. Then I pushed a pipe down from the top so I could line up everything inside.

I'm happy with the way it turned out. I put another one on the opposite side for the black tank.

WHAT?!? Not a real periscope? My kid is gonna kill me! I told him if we followed this thread close enough we could maybe have one too. We were gonna take the Argosy to the lake for a dip and everything! What am I gonna tell him?

Reminds me of another aluminum adventurer -- Charles Lindbergh. He sat behind the gas tank in the Spirit of St Louis and had a periscope just like Tim's. (really!)

War Story Warning!
One of my friends used to be in charge of maintenance for the Houses of Parliament. I was given a tour of them in let's see maybe '82 or so.
The House of Commons has many microphones dangling from the ceiling so that the members don't have to shout for the TV coverage, recordings, etc. In order to make sure they are heard, there is a real-life periscope which the sound operators peer through to make sure they have the proper mikes turned on. I was really impressed by that.

Want to embellish your periscope project?
Consider adding a salvaged automobile side view mirror's adjusting mechanism to the top periscope mirror. It can be the electrical or mechanical type, although the older mechanical types are harder to find. With that adjustable mirror you'll be able to see up & down (to some degree) as well as left and right.
The upper parts can be installed in a right angle electrical or plumbing fixture, plastic or metal- -just as long as it is water tight.

Anther far-out idea is to make your periscope into a "Camera Obscura," The adults as well as the kids will like that. I remember the one in San Francisco at Cliff House from years ago. Don't know if it is still there.

And Rob, after you get through restoring your collection of Airstreams & Tow Vehicles, you might want to start the periscope w/ camera obscura project. Zoe and the boys will love it.
