1978 28 foot ambassador water leak

I filled the fresh water tank today and I have a leak outside under the trailer. It looks like there is a metal cover and and inspection plate on the cover. What will I have access to when I remove the plate? Are the tanks plastic? What kind of job will I be getting into fixing this?

Thanks,

Dave

You will have a threaded pipe plug, probably plastic behind the inspection plate - yes the tanks are poly rotary molded plastic...I doubt if that pipe plug is the cause of you leak, however...

What model Ambassador do you have - rear bath or center bath?

In our rear bath model, I can gain access to the water outlet fitting, along with the wires for the water level indicators, right under the road-side twin bed...there is a thin wall 90 degree fitting screwed into the tank that then attaches to the water pump supply hose - that cheapo fitting was cracked in our AS when we bought it that caused a constant leak...

I bought a much better (thicker wall) elbow as a replacement and haven't had any more problems in that area...

Thanks Ray,

We have a rear bath model and I will check out the fitting today. Do you access the tank from under the trailer by removing the entire cover?

Dave,

Check the supply outlet fitting carefully to see if it's cracked, or possibly the hose connection to that fitting is leaking...

If the tank is leaking elsewhere...I'd take off that square access plate first in case the drain plug is leaking...

I guess there's always the possibly that the filler connection hose, or it's attachment point could be the culprit - but then I'd think the tank wouldn't leak unless filled up to that level...

If the above are secure and not leaking, yes, you'll have to take off the entire tank cover underneath to gain access to the tank itself and find the problem...

If the tank cover hasn't been 'dinged' by hitting something, I'd think it would be rear for a crack to develop in the tank itself otherwise...

The PO of our AS stuck something when backing up and dinged in the corner of the tank cover - it barely got into the tank, at the top, and our tank actually leads when it's full so I know the crack is at the top of the tank...I've been
putting off the project of removing the cover and trying to fix the tank, as it holds water below 90% full...

Hope you find it's an easy place to repair...
