I would still try a plunger first. My shower, tub drain was filled with limerock dirt and each time I plunge red it a little would come out.

...water will fill up the drain to about half an inch below the rim, but never overflows. I'm chalking this up to a very shallow P-trap under the shower. I found the drain line schematic in my owner's manual and it looks like a low-rise P-trap with a 90 degree bend headed to the gray tank. Doesn't seem like it works the way I imagined it should, but I'm learning a lot as I go. Thanks again for all the advice! I'm going to use the vinegar & baking soda flush for good measure on all my drains as well!

So you can fill the grey water tank and get its full contents to discharge when you open the drain valve?
In other words, "case closed?"

I think it's case closed... unless something else causes me to think there really is a clog or backup. Hard to believe that water from the shower P-trap is designed to sit just below the rim of the shower drain in the course of normal use, so I'm still scratching my head about that. We used water liberally last night and this morning with an aim to fill the gray tank close to capacity. Had a complete flush at the dump station, so I feel like the best course of action is to focus on preventative maintenance of this system and monitor things closely going forward.

If your unit is not optimally level side to side, this could prevent the lines from having enough slope to drain as engineered. Should this continue to be an issue, you might try having the unit sit a bit higher on the side opposite the dump valves to encourage water to make it from the shower to the gray tank. Just an idea that would be easy to try.

My shower trap also holds water just below the drain. Seems normal to me with the design space limitations.

grey water
Probably not your problem but my 1973 did not have a grey water tank. The pipe held about a gallon of water. I had to install a tank.
