there are three connections on the trailer. from the left is fresh water inlet, the mystery valve and just around the corner is the black tank flush. what is the red handled line for?

I'm no expert, but it sure looks like an added fixture. My guess would be that it comes off the city water supply line a little farther up inside and provides an extra water outlet. Most people attach something around the hose that splits, though. It could be that they wanted water flow outside even when they were dry-camping and just using their water pump.

Have you opened the mystery valve while there was water pressure (either city water or water pump)?

The main purpose of the red handle valve is if you are dry camping and need to wash off your dirty kids or dishes or other items, then you can use the water from your water tank.

It is a utility faucet. Washing off what ever. Mine runs off city water or the water pump and internal tank.

I have one as well. That's what it's for, and it does come in handy. I've used it as an aux water hookup for a neighbor with water connection issues, and to wash the trailer. I've even used it to fill a jug to slake the thirst of my tow vehicle.

We have connected a small length of hose between this auxillary valve and the back flush inlet to make it easier to back flush your black water tank. We then use a plastic twin valve outlet at the city water tap so we have an extra line for washing outside of trailer, etc. Another option.

I use mine for rinsing, as noted above, and also for getting the air out of the city water hose before it gets into the system (prevents sssst-ssst-sput at faucets). I also use it to relieve water pressure from the hose when I am disconnecting.
