Water Tank won't fill from outside

We are looking at a 1980 Excella II and the current owner told us the water tank wont fill. They have to be hooked up to use water.

What would cause this? Would it be a bad valve?

Would we have to replace the tank? Typically what would this repair cost?

Thank you!

Unless they did something different on this one. Typically the tank water fill has no valve. Just open the door for the water fill and stick the end of the garden hose in.

Welcome to the AirForums! Glad to have you with us!

Don't overlook ignorance as a cause. The current owner may not even realize that there is a fill port for the tank separate from the municipal water inlet. If he's trying to fill the tank from the municipal water inlet, then of course it won't work!

It's also possible that the freshwater tank drain valve is open and the owner doesn't realize there's a valve, so that water runs out about as fast as it runs in, so that when filling it won't fill.

Even if neither of those is the reason, until you try to fill it and see what's not working, you won't know. When you go to look at it, try filling it yourself. You may piss off the owner because you're not taking his word for it, but them's the breaks. Better that than buying an unknown problem with an unknown repair cost.

Inlet pipe could be plugged, try a shop vac on it or running a coat hangar down it to see if there is an obstruction.

Not sure about yours but the tank on my 64 has a vent and it was clogged up. The tank would not fill until I unclogged it.

The fill port is a little flap door on the street side near the wheel well. You open the door and stick the garden hose in the bigger of the two holes and turn on the hose. There is a small hole above the big one that is the vent. Also you have to turn on the pump to use the fresh water tank. If the tank level gages are not working you don't know if the tank is full or not unless you turn on the pump. If the pump keeps running with all the faucets closed and no leaks are in the system then the pump is bad or there is no water in the tank.

The owner is also going to tell you the floor has no rot and there are not leaks which is a lie 99.9% of the time.

That's good to know about the vent, now just to try and remember that piece of information.
