Starting hot water heater

I can't seem to get the hot water heater started on my new-to-me 2014.5 Interstate 3500 EXT. Have closed drains, opened heater bypass valve, filled fresh water tank, turned on water pump, and bled air through faucets. When I turn on the gas switch on the little white control I do NOT get the red light. What might I be doing wrong?

The red light only comes on if it fails to light.

How do you know it didn't light? Go outside and listen, you should here it if you are on gas and it is operating.

Is your LP solenoid on or off? This is a valve that supplies LP to the coach and is controlled by the little toggle switch in the black box outside the coach behind the passenger side rear wheel well. Also, check your fuses to be certain that the one responsible for LP operation of the water heater is not blown.

Is there water in it? (I know this is a strange question, but I have had more than one call for non-working water heaters that had no water in them!!!

How long did you wait after turning the heater on to open a hot water faucet? It is not an instantaneous process and will take at least 15-20 minutes of continual LP burn to heat the water.

Flick the pressure relief valve on the outside of the heater to be certain that it is full. Water should come out immediately.

Have you tried operation on 120VAC electric? Same waiting period.

We'll be waiting for your report.................

Thumbs up Success!

  1. Not the propane solenoid, the cooktop works
  2. Pulled the pressure relief, there was water in it
  3. Not the fuse, the galley lights (also on that fuse) work
  4. Assume the electric works because the amps jump up immediately when I turn it on
Never heard it from outside the camper, but just left it on an hour and now I have hot water!

I think that I was just impatient.

Thank you all so much!
