Rain water gets into fresh water tank

I've noticed that when my trailer is stored for a long period of time with an empty fresh water tank, the level monitor will read 1/4 full. Seems that rain water is getting in through the locked filler door.

This has happened over the winter after the trailer has been winterized and nothing has broken, but this year I would like to take extra precautions.

Is there a gasket that can be made for the filler door, or maybe just put some electrical tape around the edges of the door?

A better solution might be to add a drip rail over the filler door. Something like this, on a smaller scale…

Nice idea. I think I have some scrap aluminum angle that I can fabricate into a similar shape. I might just "glue" it into place with Parbond or Vulkum.

In order for rainwater leaking in through that door to show up on your monitor, you would have to be having floods of biblical proportions, like 24"+ per day. Look for another cause.

Any chance the water heater and lines are draining or syphoning back? 30 gal fresh tank. 9gal w/heater = aprox 1/4.

If your door is the locking type like mine, I just tape it over for storage with aluminum tape.....Phil.

Is there actually water in the fresh water tank or is that what the monitor is telling you?

The fresh water fill has a vent opening adjacent to it. It is typically a small opening with a screen over it. If water were flooding into the hatch where you fill the potable water tank, I suspect water could run in through the vent. It is simply a piece of tubing off the top of the tank to vent the tank as you fill and empty. The recommendations here to prevent water running into the hatch are good ones.
