Keep or discard tank

I have a 63 Flying Cloud with one of the cylindrical galvanized or aluminum fresh water tanks under the front window. Would it be advisable to toss it and get a new one (not sure what's been going on in there for the last 40 years) or clean it somehow?

thanks

Hello dmaiden,

our 60 trdwnd had the aluminum round tank ,others have the galvanized one.
i had a stainlees steel tank built for my trailer from a local fabricator that works with stainless steel and aluminum .Well ,the old tank I had was trashed
inside and had pinhole leaks where it touched the floor ,but alas ,no floor rot
.Most folks are going with the plastic tanks ,Inca plastics is one maker and
there can be some used ones found also ,try the (search) function using
water tank replacement for a title.the plastic tanks and a new water pump seems to be the best choice.I wouldn't go back to an aluminum tank ,but it is lighter than the stainless steel unit .Others here will have good ideas to help you also.

Dave.

If you do go with a new plastic tank, you'll also have to add an on demand pump like a Shurflo and the plastic tank will have to be vented.

You original tank was pressurized by an external compressor or an on-board compressor.

Yes, it has an external compressor, and even had some pressure in it when I took off the cap. Have to add venting, hmmm? Hadn't thought of that. Is the reason there is no vent on the current one because it's pressurized?

There is also an issue that I can't remove the inlet pipe that sticks out the front. I put all my 800 lbs on it and it won't turn. Will have to get a big pipe and use the old leverage thing.

That's right.

The plastic tank cannot be pressurized, since it would blow up

So you put in an on-demand pump to suck the water out of it. Since you are pulling the water out of it you'll need to vent it so the sides of the tank won't cave in as you empty it.
