Hi we are new to the fulltiming scene as well the AS. My husband and I have a 1970 31' Land yacht that is serving as our semi off grid home (we have power, no well). The fresh water holding tank has been disconnected at the filler tube, the supply lines are capped off. Any thoughts why? We assume there is a problem with the tank. Is there any way to check it or take it out? Thanks, Kevin and Charlotte

Kevin and Charlotte,
First welcome aboard.
Second the easy way to confirm a problem with the potable water tank is to just fill it and look for leaks from the tank enclosure under the trailer. The hard way is to remove the enclosure from the belly of the trailer to gain access to your potable water, gray, and black tanks.

Since you have a vintage unit and it sounds like you may be looking for parts, these two places will become invaluable

We have the correct water tank, that we have specially made, for your 1970 Airstream, should you find thast you need one.

We also have more parts for the vintage trailers, than anyone in the world, since we have many of the original molds, etc.

Rather than fill the tank with water and run the risk of a leak that will be hard to locate and could cause additional problems. Remove one of the caps or if it is plastic tap into it and install a air valve. If that is a problem install an air valve at the hot water heater drain. Once installed and with all faucets turned off pump air into the tank. Just enough, a couple of pounds, that you can see the pressure on a tire gauge or hear the air escape when you open the air valve. If you hear a leak as fast as you are pumping you have found the reason. If not let it set for several hours and assuming there is no major change in temperature read the pressure again or check the pressure at the valve. Any significant drop in pressure is a leak.

Thanks, we are going to look into the pumping air idea as to the water supply is limited. When all else fails replace it!

It's not hard to remove and check that water tank in a 1970's model. It should be under the floor, in front of the front axle.
You have to remove one side of the steel bars that protrude from the frame, and then slide out the plywood that holds up the tank. But make sure that the lines really are disconnected.
With the tank out, you can inspect it for cleanliness and cracks etc.
