Fresh water tank leak 2013 Flying Cloud

Our 2013 Flying Cloud fresh water tank is leaking. Any suggestions for repair? It looks like it came apart at the seam.

What about using....

J-B Weld 8272 MarineWeld Marine Epoxy - 2 oz. or

EternaBond tape. Calk or

Permatex Plastic Tank Repair Kit

Any other suggestions?

with a 2013, you're barely out of warranty. Have you asked AS to cover under warranty?

I am no expert, but before I tried to fix a FW tank split along the seam, I would see what the cost of a replacement tank was.

Good luck!

and finally, I have not had good results with JB Weld Marine expoxy. it seemed too brittle once it dried.

I attempted this once with JBWeld. It did not work. I fully prepped the surface; I sanded it, cleaned it with acetone and 91% alcohol, and used regular JBWeld (not the fast-curing version) and it didn't work at all. The plastic these tanks are made of seem to exude some sort of slipperiness that nothing will properly adhere to.

I'd replace the tank.

You'd be better off buying a replacement tank. Since it's recent it should be readily available. Short of plastic welding or some really expensive chemicals just about nothing sticks to the poly that the tanks are made of.

Here is a link to another thread discussing a leak. I used the epoxy mentioned and it solved my problem. It was a different problem but the epoxy (G Flex) mentioned worked for me and my tank is still leak free.

I have a 2013 25 FB Flying Cloud, last week I returned home from a camping trip and found the fresh water tank leaking. I crawled under the trailer and found no signs of damage. It look like water is dripping from the plastic tank cover between the axels. Anyone have advice on how to drop the cover and inspect the tank?

Omega man,

There are many threads about FW tanks leaking from the water line attachment fitting to the tank.

According to others who dropped their tank themselves it appears the common cause is over tightening of fitting to the tank. This seems to be a manufacturing defect as the tanks themselves are designed for rugged industrial use in harsh environments.

http://www.ameri-kart.com/Home.aspx

Ameri-Kart supplies the tanks to Airstream out Indiana and they a very reputable firm.

The tanks are Low Density Poly Ethylene (LDPE). This kind of plastic can only be properly repaired by thermal welding that either use a special plastic hot glue gun, a high speed 15,000 RPM tool or a chemical weld that will melt bond the plastic together. see the video below

Some folks have had success using other methods. But I doubt that repairs will last if the plastic is not welded together.

I have a 2010 28' Flying Cloud that just sprang a leak where the fresh water suction line attaches to the tank. So what you see in my post is a result of research in this forum and online.

Bottom line, you have a couple of choices; either have the tank repaired or replace it with a new through an Airstream dealer as Ameri-Kart will sell direct to the public.

Below is an excellent post showing a replacement of a 2010 28' Flying Cloud fresh water tank.

In my view this is a common enough problem that it could be defined as a manufacturing defect and certainly subject to warranty repair by Airstream.
