Filling Fresh Water Tank '65 Safari

I have just started to restore a 65 Safari and am working on the plumbing. My question is: When I fill the fresh water tank manually what fills the hot water tank? When I use the city water hook up then the city pressure fills it. If my water pump fills the hot water tank then I would need to do that and then continue to fill the fresh water tank. FW tank holds 30 gals and water heater holds 6 so If I only put the 30 gal. in then I would use 6 gal for the water heater after the pump kicks in. In other words I should not light the water heater until I have turned on the pump?

Help please as I don't know what I'm doing.

You are correct, if your hot water tank is empty, you will need to fill your main tank, turn on your pump and fill your hot water tank, then top off your main tank. However, unless you have manually drained your hot water tank after your last hook up to city water, then it will normally already be close to full. Also, the thermocouple in your hot water tank should prevent you from overheating an empty tank.

Hope that helps!
