Drilled a hole in water tank, HELP

I accidentally drilled a 1/4" hole in the top of my fresh water tank.
I was drilling a 2-1/2" hole in the floor with a hole saw and mis-calculated where the fresh water tank is, luckily only the 1/4" pilot drill went through the tank.

How can I repair this?
Two things I can think of to fix this are, polypropylene welding rod and hot glue gun or tap it 5/16-18 and put a stainless steel bolt in it.

Your thoughts on ths would be appreciated.

Is it the original, or a replacement tank? You may be able to go to a plastic company with it, and have a threaded hole spin welded in place, then thread a plug into the hole.

It may be you can use the same technique that is used to mount the level sensors in the tanks. In my '92 it appears to be a 1/4 inch hole drilled into the tank with a short metal probe held in place only from the outside by either welding or gluing. Sorry that I do not know how those probes are attached.

Expandable rubber plug , find the smallest expandable freeze plug at the auto store or boaters use rubber plugs for sealing drains. You may have to up the size of the accidental hole for this method.

I would say plastic weld sold at Walmart mix it and put some in a Katcup bottle and fill the hole .

Did the center piece fall in tank that would be What I worry about ?

Anyone know what kind of plastic the fresh water tank is made of?


If it is ABS plastic I would get a piece of ABS plastic that is over size of the hole like a inch .
1) Clean area with PVC cleaner (PVC pipe cleaner) preps plastic and work area for bonding.DONT use to much it will soften plastic if excess is left on
2) Use PVC cement (for abs,pvc,) apply to ABS piece and to area your covering .Then apply piece to hole.
3) Apply cement to edges like five or six times letting it dry between layers.

I used this method to fill in the hole I had in my tub from having to cut out drain which was rusted solid.

Since it is o the top of the tank and will never see any pressure and you can get to it through the 2 1/2 in hole i would just use a Boiler Plug. They are self tapping screws with a rubber washer.

Go to your local home supply store and buy a coil of 1/4" polyethylene tubing. Insert the tubing through the hole and route the tubing up behind the gaucho.

Fill the water tank with beer.

Insert the other end of the tubing into your mouth, recline on the gaucho. Enjoy.

Quick and neat....SS screw, rubber washer, some silicone sealant...it will probably outlast the trailer!

Don't feel bad. When I was in one of those "don't need a man,"moods when I was single, I was hanging a hook from my basement ceiling and accidentally hit the main sewer pipe. My "rent a husband" couldn't stop laughing and besides not being able to use the water for 48 hours it cost me $70.00 to repair the pipe and the dry wall.

JB Weld is another option. On my old SOB I fixed cracks as long as 6-8" with fiberglass and JB Weld. that was 5 years ago, no leaks. With a hole that small you might get away with just JB Weld. For added security, put a small fiberglass patch over the hole, and then JB Weld all over that. The JB Weld will outlast the black tank.

I have seen a bunch of great ideas here. I would go along with the two part epoxies made for patching gas tanks, etc. It cures fast and is impervious to liquids. Walmart carries it.

JB Weld makes a product specifically to repair tanks and pipes. It's called "JB Water Weld". It cures over wet surfaces and even underwater. Great stuff!!!

Howie nailed it, with some polyurethane on the washer, it worked for over 10 Seasons on our Safari.
