Check Valve / Back Flow Preventer

I have a Safari trailer where the brass inline check valve is located a few feet from the water heater. The problem is that the check valve is not sitting properly and doing its job. As a result I've replaced it with a like unit and it too appears to fail. When the city water is turned off and the hose is disconnected, the water drains off and especially when the pump is turned on. As a temporary fix I'm using a hose shut off valve at the inlet; however, this is very risky in freezing weather. The check valve is installed correctly and in the proper direction. Any recommendations or suggestions?

You know, we had the same problem on ours. I also used an in-line shut off clipped to the end of my inlet hose until I asked the boys at Out of Doors Mart to replace it and it works fine now. I'll be interested to hear what some of our veterans say about making the fix work for you.

Thank you for your response. I have since cured my problem by replacing the brass check valve with a hard plastic one which might be PEX material. The secret is that the check valve must have have an internal 4 point star to keep the seat properly aligned which is visible when looking at one end. The previous two brass check valves did not have the 4 point star. I had checked many RV suppliers and none had check valves with the 4 point star. I found the hard plastic check valve on Amazon. I hope this might help others should the need arise.

I used Teflon tape on the threads and reused the previous tapered
O-rings. I suggest snugging the fittings very carefully so as not to break anything; then I checked for leaks and all was okay.
