Aluminum "brick" of about 5x7x2 that water is piped through? 2013 FC 23D

I've got a 2013 Flying Cloud 23D. Under the lav sink, outboard against the skin, is what looks to be an rough cast aluminum box of about 5x7x2 that has a white water pipe and a red water pipe connected to fittings in the inboard surface of the "brick".

I curious to know what this is for. I feel the need to understand my AS systems so as to be able to deal with unforeseen circumstances when traveling.

The "Brick" is filled with Byamite crystals to purify the on board water while Caravanning.

I found a photo of this "brick" on post 177 of my "SilverGate's Safari is Home at Last" thread, and you're right, mandolindave, the outdoor shower is just on the other side!

(And by the way, those white knobs sometimes loosen and could be a source of water leaking and intermittent running of the water pump. Early on, I found mine to have a slow drip and I just tightened it by hand. See: lewster's comment about not over tightening plastic knobs in the trailer.)
