awning

I have to say I have learned a lot about the awnings in this project. I know that the thread that zipdee uses is tiny thread, that rots way before the fabric does.I know that even though I am not a pro at sewing, but a lock stitch would last so much longer than a chain stitch. If you pull on one tiny part of a zipdee seam, the thread just unravels and does not stop until you cut or burn the end. That being said, I recommend Aleenes super fabric glue ( liquid stitch). This stuff is great. I made a jig.. a 2x2 to go under each seam, and removed the thread and applied this stuff. to both pieces of fabric on the overlap. Press is flat and tape the seam, Sets up in about an hour. The results are fantastic. I would trust the repairs in any kind of weather. It takes a while, I can only do one seam at a time, about 4 ft. then move the board to the next, do it and so on. After going the length, I started over with the awning rolled up to the point of the glue line. I am still going to put some safety stitches in with the awl kit that you recommended. It is like repairing a sail, which I have done a long time ago. will post pictures tomorrow.I really am happy with this,Richard

I know this is an old post but have a similar problem and am wondering how this repair with glue worked out over time?

I have had the same problem on boats for many, many years. I finally solved it by specifying that all outside covers be sewn with Gortex thread. It adds to the price, but in the the long run it will outlast the fabric.
