Treat original 59 awning?

Hello y'all
This is the original awning for our 59 18'er. It's in great shape, had a few minor repairs done on some damaged areas and heard from some that we should treat it with some kind of sun/water proof spray.

We also heard from others that we shouldn't treat it with anything untill we talk to someone who knows, and here we are, asking people who know!!

So, what if anything should we treat our awning with to preserve it forever!!!

Thanks so much,
Jeph

Cool awning! I hope to find one someday similar to this for my 63 Globetrotter - sure hope someone here has some firsthand experience with extending the life of these vintage awnings. To stop using it is not an option...

But they don't look like the subject of this thread...no big, bold stripes...no aqua...no deep valance...and no fringe...

When we first started camping we had a Sears vintage family canvas tent, huge, but it's signature was its awning, like this one of yours, deep valance, fringe, aqua, the whole deal. We loved it and cried when the old tent finally couldn't be sewn together any longer. The awnings remind me of troubadour tents from days of old and all that silly jazz! Best wishes in finding a way to keep yours keeping on ~G
