Split awning seams

Just picked up a '78 soverign with a zip dee awning (about 21' long) The seams between the pannels which run perpendicular to the trailer are split because the thread apparrently failed. The material although dirty seems to be sound.

Anyone know where or how to get this reseamed?

Split awning seams

Greetings APB and welcome to the Forum!

Depending upon the amount of work you are prepared to do yourself, there are a number of options.

1.) If you are prpepared to remove the fabric from the roller tube and channel on the trailer, there are a number of possibilities including:

A. An automotive upholstery shop.
B. An awning specialty shop.
C. A tent maker

2.) If you are not prepared to remove the fabric yourself, the choices are less varied as you will likely need to find an RV dealer who is willing to remove the fabric and send it out to a specialty shop for reseaming. Depending upon labor rates in your area, you may find that the total cost of a professional approach to this project will near the cost of new fabric direct from Zip Dee.

Good luck with your project.

Kevin

Drill the rivets

I just done this exact repair to an awning. a full length awning.

Ihad to drill out the rivets and remove the material from the tube.

I had to "un-crimp" the fabric cord from the metal guard.

It was rather cumbersome to fold the awning small enough to fit it under the arm of the sewing machine.

But I managed to re-sew all of the seams and replace the original fabric.

Cost zero dollars.

Another option

A shop that makes or repairs sailboat sails will have the machines and the weather-resistant thread to make such repairs. There should be plenty of such places in southern California.

Awning repair

Thanks folks. Lots of sail makers around as well as a few awning makers.
