Shortening a Zip Dee Awning?

I'm considering purchasing a used awning that is too long for my rig. It appears to me that cutting the roller and spring assembly and making it shorter wouldn't be too difficult; but I'm hoping there is someone else out there that has tried this and can give me a few pointers or keep me from making a big mistake. Thanks.

Should be easy

I have not cut one but I have disassembled a few.

You should not have to cut the spring (I dont think you can actually). The spring is only about four feet long so the rest of the tube is hollow. The end caps come out failry easily after drilling the rivets out. Obviously you want to remove the end cap that does not have the spring behind it.

As for the z-lock, I suggest replacing it while you are at it, cost about 60 bucks I think.

I have cut down a Zip Dee by 2' to get it to fit my '59 Trade Wind. It was from a '66 Overlander that had seen better days. Only one end can be cut down without affecting the spring because its about 4' long inside the tube and attached to only one end. When the awning is attached to the trailer, its the front end that can be cut down. My awning guy did it when he cut down the fabric and re-seamed it and he did it for less than $100. As Pete wrote, "I call that a bargain".

BTW: I would love to know more about your Trade Wind. Any pictues available?
