Replacing the Head piece

I have to replace the head piece on one side of my awning. Is there any tension there if I am just doing the one side. This is the side that has the locking mechanism. All I need to do is switch out that part with the new.

Yes there is in all likelyhood stored energy in your awning unless all the springs are broken. If you are not familiar with your awning system you need to stop until you find out how service and maintenance is performed on your specific make/model. There can be a tremendous amount of stored energy just waiting to be released. I witnesses a winding rod being slung through the side of a neighbors trailer one time.

Download a service manual for your system before proceeding, or better yet seek the asistance of a knowledgable friend to help you out the first time you work on it. Just proceed with caution.

Regards,

Kevin

Steve,
Be very careful, I almost broke my wrist taking mine apart to clean it. Take a look at this thread it has some good documentation on how to unload and reload the spring in the Zip Dees...

Old (1970s) Zip Dee instructions

Good luck and be careful.
