Old (1970s) Zip Dee instructions
I wish I had this when I was working on the Sovereign. At least this provides some idea on how to tame the spring motor and how one might get the awning off without killing ones self or breaking something.

To safely remove the awning from the trailer, you must first extend the awning, and then "unwind" the tension on the rear arm, which is connected to the only spring.
You absolutely right, if you don'y do it correctly, it's very possible to get severely hurt.
Years ago, I had a report of a man that had his throat severly cut open, by the rear awning arm.
Glad you made it OK.

Actually, Andy, I was having extreme difficulty extending the awning when the fabric came loose from the awning rail. But I jumped a mile, anyway. The thing I didn't know, until I saw these instrutions, was that the rollup case "unhooks" from the rail--you don't have to slide it out like a vintage awning. This will save me on the Safari!
When I was having trouble with the Sovereign's big awning, everyone kept referring to the "lock," but clearly that feature was added later.

Hey!It's the awning off the front of our Sovereign!
Looks just as goofy in person as it does in the ad...

Zep - I don't know if you'll see this or not, but I want to go on the record with a huge THANK YOU! for putting this up.
Bart and I are in the process of refurbishing our ZipDee - he's doing the metal stuff and I'm sewing the new awning - so instructions of how it is supposed to go together are very helpful. The underlying theme behind what we have is "The last person to repair this awning didn't have a clue." Parts have been installed upside down, backwards, and simply been made wrong (e.g. copying the back claw to replace the front one, instead of mirroring the part). When we're done, we'll post the whole existing comedy of errors and our (hopefully) functional remake on our Tin Pickle blog.
It's sometimes hard to tell what is original and what has been mis-done by the PO. This documentation clears that up. Hooray for clarity!

This is what I live for, congrats from my esteemed Streamers and Burners!
If you need to fix you slats so you can reinsert the fabric, see post #2 in
this thread. The repair I did to the Sovereign has lasted through several 3,000 mile trips, Burning Man, and the Balloon Fiesta, with plenty of wind while camped with the awning out.

Those will come in handy. Will these instructions work for the newer ZipDee Awnings as well? I have not had a chance to mess with mine much. I took the rear one off the other day and it unwound and I just left it off for the time being till I get a chance to figure out the spring.

Perry.
CAUTION.
DO NOT mess with a Zip Dee awning spring, UNLESS you know exactly how "FIRST".
They have been known to slice open a mans throat, when assuming.

Excellent!
Our slat slots are pretty well munched. The previous "crimper" didn't so much roll the gap shut as squish the hell out of it with vise grips...after installing the awning cloth upside down.
When we ordered the awning cloth, we ordered some 4' lengths of something we could rivet on that edge as a replacement channel, if necessary. We'll have to balance the re-forming results against the rivets we would need to attach the new channel.
I think we might have some 1/4" steel rod kicking around that could do the same job as the drill bit as the "anvil."
