How to open an old curved travel trailer awning

How do you open an old curved awning on a 1973 Silver Streak travel trailer?

Does it have a lock at the end of the rail?

It looks like an A&E style but has no name on it.

Can't get it to open.

Any advise?

Thanks
David

In your first picture that little "loop" thingy at the end of the roller tube is the lock mechanism, it needs to be pulled or pushed to unlock the roller so you can pull it down. There may be locks on the arms too, though from the looks of it, just the leather straps may be all you have. If the internal spring or other part of the mechanism is broken it may not work regardless. On my old A&E or Carefree if the internal spring was broken the awning would unroll, just not roll back up.

I just checked a couple of mine (all appear to be newer models) the "switch" is pulled down to open and pushed up to close, that is the common denominator on the 3 I looked at.

If you end up having to remove the roller, be very, very careful. If the spring has tension and you put your fingers in the wrong place they can be amputated.
